The position
Most houses that call themselves beachfront are a street back, with a glimpse of water between two others. This one looks straight over the sea: in front of the house runs only Kusweg itself, the quiet beach road — no houses on the other side of it, just the dune and the sand. Cross it, take the wooden walkway through the dune, and you are on the beach.
The sea fills the whole window from the upstairs lounge, and you will hear it at night with the doors shut.
Life on Kusweg
Kusweg runs along the front, and it strikes a balance most beach roads get wrong. It is not a thoroughfare — nobody is using it to get anywhere. But it is not deserted either.
From first light there are runners on it, people walking dogs, someone heading down for a swim before work. In the evening it fills up again for the hour before dark. You can walk the road or drop onto the sand and walk that instead — either way, you are never the only one out.
That matters when you are far from home. The neighbours live here all year, the road has people on it at both ends of the day, and someone will notice you and say good morning. This is a street that is looked after, not one where you are on your own.
First and last light
This stretch faces south-east across the bay, so you get the sunrise coming up over the water — early enough in summer that you will catch one whether you plan to or not.
Evenings are the other one. The light goes long and gold along the beach, the surf drops, and the whole village seems to end up outside. Walk far enough in either direction and you have the sand to yourself.

Two front doors
Top and bottom are entirely self-contained, self-catering homes, each with its own entrance, kitchen and bathrooms. Book the top, the bottom, or the whole house. When both units are booked by different parties, you share the driveway and the walkway to the beach, and nothing else — and if you would rather have the building entirely to yourselves, book the whole house.

The numbers
Every season is priced and nothing is hidden — and booking the whole house costs less per night than taking the two units separately.
From the terrace
Pods work their way along this stretch of coast through December and January, often close enough to watch from the deck with a cup of coffee.
The picture behind these words is ours — an actual drone shot of a pod passing in front of the house, like every dolphin and whale on this site.
Whales are a different season. Southern right whales come into the bay to calve from June to November — not over Christmas. If you want whales, come in winter, when the house is quieter and cheaper.
Sharks patrol the backline in the clear shallows, and an orca has passed the house on camera. All four are on the whale page — filmed by us.

Everything listed here is either visible in the photographs on this page or confirmed by the owners. If something matters to your booking and it is not listed, please ask rather than assume.
If you are coming from abroad
December and January are the middle of our summer, not our winter. They are also the South African school holidays, which is why they are the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year, and why the minimum stay is seven nights.
The weather itself is famously kind: Mossel Bay, twenty minutes away, is widely credited — via the 1992 Guinness Book of Records — with the second mildest all-year climate in the world after Hawaii — rarely under 10°C in winter, rarely over 28°C in summer. There is no month here that punishes a visitor.
There is no useful public transport here. Hire a car at George Airport, just over twenty minutes away. We drive on the left. The roads along this coast are good, the drive from the airport is easy — and the December traffic that clogs the holiday towns never reaches Kusweg.
You may have read about South African load-shedding — scheduled national power cuts. The house runs on solar backup, so your holiday is not planned around a timetable.
The house has an alarm linked to armed response, and security cameras outside. Between that, the neighbours who live here all year and the road with people on it at both ends of the day, this is a place families sleep with the windows open in summer.
A host welcomes you at the house and shows you around — no key safes, no hunting for a lockbox in the dark. Arrival times are flexible: tell us when you land and we arrange around it, late landings included.
The Western Cape has no malaria. You can visit the game reserve up the road with small children and no tablets.

Tergniet sits right between Mossel Bay and George — twenty minutes into Mossel Bay one way, just over twenty to George Airport the other. And in December, when holiday traffic crawls through the towns, none of it reaches this street.

Between June and November, very likely — southern right whales calve in this bay. Over Christmas, no. That is dolphin season instead, and they come past often.
Across the quiet beach road and down the wooden walkway — a minute, barefoot. No houses stand between you and the sea.
Seeplaas is about 150 metres along the sand — a restaurant, a café with a children’s play area, a wine bar and an art gallery. Great Brak River is seven minutes by car.

Kusweg is quiet without being empty — runners and dog walkers morning and evening, and neighbours who greet you.
The zipline billed as the world’s longest over the ocean is 20 minutes away at Mossel Bay, along with a boat trip out to a colony of three thousand seals, a game reserve inland, and the Cango Caves beyond Oudtshoorn — an hour and three-quarters, and worth it. See things to do.
Garden Walk at Hartenbos is about 12 minutes — a large Checkers, Food Lover’s Market and Dis-Chem. The Garden Route Mall in George, 25 minutes, has 125 shops and a cinema.
Very. The bottom unit has a room set up for them, and the tidal pools along this beach are the safest swimming here for small children. Lifesavers are stationed at the main Mossel Bay beaches — Hartenbos, Santos, De Bakke — over the December holidays; on this quieter beach, keep the little ones to the pools.
